Starting a new school, changing classrooms or returning after a long break can feel enormous for an autistic child. The unfamiliar people, sounds, routes and expectations all arrive together. Preparation cannot remove every uncertainty, but it can make the first days more predictable and give your child useful ways to ask for support.
Begin with a simple visual preview
Ask the school for photographs of the entrance, classroom, toilet, transport point and key adults. Put them into a short picture sequence: “We travel to school → enter the gate → meet the teacher → do an activity → return home.” Review it calmly for several days. Include the ending so your child can see that the school day finishes.
Practise the smallest steps
If possible, visit when the campus is quiet. Walk the route, find the toilet and identify a calm space. Rehearse practical phrases or AAC buttons such as “break,” “help,” “toilet” and “home.” Keep the communication method your child already uses available throughout the transition.
Give the school a one-page support note
Share your child’s strengths, communication style, sensory needs, signs of overload, calming strategies, food or safety concerns and what motivates them. Agree on one contact person and a brief daily update method. Ask whether a phased start, transition warnings, movement breaks or headphones are possible.
Expect adjustment to take time. After school, reduce demands and offer familiar food, movement or quiet time. Watch for patterns rather than judging one difficult day. If distress is intense or persistent, meet the school and your child’s qualified professional to adjust the plan.
